On Spring Break 2024, I was chosen to travel with TRIO SSS at VCU to Atlanta Georgia for an
Alternative Spring Break Trip. TRIO SSS is a federally funded program to support
undergraduate students by providing resources and tools that lead to the academic, personal,
and professional success of low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities. The
purpose of this trip was to allow students to understand the African American history and culture within the city of Atlanta Georgia to enable students to get the opportunity to visit graduate schools within the area. During the duration of the trip, I was able to visit historic sites and museums in Atlanta to learn more about the different people who paved the way for African
Americans today. One of the places that I enormously enjoyed was the Martin Luther King Jr
National Historical Park. I learned that he and his family were members of the Ebenezer Baptist
Church which Dr. King served as the pastor during his lifetime. It was truly a great experience to
witness the landmark where Dr. King grew up and promoted the cause for justice and equality
for African Americans. The Presidential Student Ambassadors program assisted me in my
efforts during this trip by instilling in me that I represent Virginia Commonwealth University
everywhere I go because I am a student leader and ambassador here on campus. As a
Presidential Student Ambassador, it has also shown me that college is a space where it is
essential to take strides in developing more professional skills so that we can positively market
ourselves when it is time to apply for different jobs, internships, and positions outside of the
institution. This semester has come with a lot of great opportunities and being able to travel with
TRIO was one of the highlights of my semester.
