Last summer, I had the privilege to shadow three Dentists at my local dental office as
well as receive my certification as a dental assistant. During this time, I gained valuable
information and hands-on experience in this field. The more I shadowed, the more I fell in love
with dentistry. I was able to observe different procedures from an up-close perspective, which
allowed me to see just how much precision is needed when performing procedures such as
crowns, root canals, or fillings to get appealing results for the patient. Additionally, I witnessed
firsthand how teamwork and communication between dentists and dental assistants play vital
roles in a smooth and functional office.
One of the main reasons I chose to pursue the field of dentistry is because of its need for
diversity. Growing up, I never saw a Dentist who was a person of color. I believe that it is
important to see this kind of diversity in fields like Dentistry because it enhances the care of the
patient. As a Dentist or any healthcare worker, you will come across patients from diverse
backgrounds with various beliefs and cultural norms. Diversity in these fields will help address
healthcare disparities and promote health equity. I often feel inspired to continue this path when I see individuals from diverse backgrounds succeeding in not only Dentistry but other
health-related fields. Representation matters, and I hope to be a part of this soon.
The Presidential Student Ambassadors provided tremendous support throughout this
journey. Their speakers provided insights into navigating the professional world, helping me
refine my elevator pitch, and secure my shadowing position. Additionally, they encouraged me to
contemplate my future brand and explore the various opportunities offered. Because of PSA’s
guidance, I am now equipped with the knowledge and confidence to pursue a career in Dentistry.
